'What the Buddha taught' from W. Rahula is a very nice introduction into the teaching of the Buddha. The book is written in a simple and understandable language. As far as it was translatable the book was written without technical terms. Some Pali words (Pali is the language the Buddha spoke) are unavailable as the word cannot be directly translated in to the western language.

To read "What the Buddha taught" is handy from anyone who is just curious to know what Buddhism is all about to anyone who is going to study the Buddha Dhamma seriously. Whatever stage you are at this book can enrich everyone and is excellent for anyone who would like to understand Thai mentality better.

The book starts with a short overview of the life of the Buddha. The first part is about the attitude of mind of Buddhism (What is Buddhism, religion or philosophy? Belief versus insight). The second part is about what the Buddha taught, namely "The Four Noble Truths".

Followed by introductory explanations about meditation and reflections about to what extent Buddhism can lead a role in today’s life. In the addendum you can find some selected texts from the Pali Canon (historical scriptures, directly related to the teachings of the Buddha).

This book can help lead anyone who opens his heart for this knowledge on a magical journey of better understanding of oneself, ones fellow man and about the truth of how the things really are. The result of this will inevitably be true happiness, utter satisfaction and inner peace.
