You can find snorkeling places at Koh Samui, the Angthong National Marine Park, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan.
There are very few places where you can go snorkelling at Koh Samui. Koh Samui island itself is not really the snorkeling destination. The waters are clear near the beach, beautiful for swimming and playing the Frisbee but if you go out a bit further it becomes unclear. Around the time of April - Mai and August - September the visibility can be a bit better though.
You will find mainly rocks with some nice corals and decent mariner life. There used to be lots of stingrays near Grandfather's & Grandmother's Rocks but we haven’t been there for quite a while.
You can rent a motorbike in one of the many rental places we recommend Juergen or ask at the reception of your hotel. Other options would be taxi or public transport called Song Taew.
Koh Taen, Koh Madsum are small islands in the south west of Koh Samui with some snorkeling spots. You can rent a long tail boat or book a trip at one of the many travel agencies at Koh Samui.
This island is famous for the full moon party but not for spectacular snorkeling sites. Same as at Koh Samui and Angthong the visibility is most of the year quite poor. The snorkeling seems to be best at the north-west corner around Koh Maa.
You could go on your own by booking a ferry ticket from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan. If you do so we recommend to stay at least one night at the island. As you have only about half day between arrival in the morning and departure of the last ferry in the afternoon.
You can book on of the sailing trips or boat tours to Koh Phangan that include snorkeling. As the snorkeling is really nothing special there are no dedicated snorkeling trips.
This is where the magic happens. In the shallow waters of these impossible beautiful islands there many terrific snorkeling spots and clear waters. The diversity of stone corals is second to none. If you look around you will easily find spots with more than 10 different kind of corals in one square meter. Curious sergeant major fishes come close to see who is swimming in their area. Anemones, these Flower like creatures lining around the reefs and making it look like a real garden. At pore corals, you’ll find plenty of the most beautiful worms in the world, the very colourful so called Christmas tree worms. They even made it, in a supersized version, to the movie Avatar. On top of it all there all kinds of tropical reef fishes some of which swim in huge schools. Every now and again a turtle makes the snorkelling day to something special.
If you don’t need any service and don’t mind to snorkeling at the common places you can choose between a range of speed boat operators from cheap to expensive. Journey time around 1h 30 min when sea is calm. Try not to sit in the front if the sea is not 100% calm. Your back will thank you.
Then there are the snorkeling trips with the big ferry companies. As they have big boats, built for a few hundred passengers the journey is comfortable. In high season make sure you come early to get a seat in the strongly air conditioned cabin. They make a stop a Koh Phangan and Koh Tao before they are heading to the snorkeling sites which is why the journey is quite long (2-3 hours). They also snorkeling at the common places.
If you don’t want to make compromises between comfort, safety, a short journey with cruising experience, a spacious boat and unparalleled service, your choice might be Calypso and their Catamaran Yachts. Journey time around 1h 40 min.
If you want to see the best places of the reef, nothing is better than a guided snorkeling trip. In small groups of no more than 12 people Calypso ensures individual service. With a fresh ciabatta sandwich or croissant from an Italian bakery and a nice chat with the guide time seems to fly by easily. All guides are professional dive instructors who fit the masks and fins with every single snorkeler. Children get small equipment if requested at booking. Before it’s time to step into the warm, turquoise water the guide will give a detailed introduction into snorkeling and safety instructions.
In two sessions, each being around 1 hour the friendly staff shows around the reef and guides to the best parts. Safety is taken very seriously. A member of the boat crew is sitting in a kayak providing live vests, spare masks and snorkels. His elevated position allows a good overview at the people snorkeling around the reef.
Between the two sessions you can fill the hungry belly with delicious home cooked Thai food. As there is hot water on board all day long, you can relax after lunch with a nice cup of coffee or tea. While you relax, the captain cruises the boat to the next snorkeling site. The journey along the islands is a highlight in itself.
Arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you are visiting Koh Samui there is no excuse not to go there. The island scape is so incredible beautiful you can’t see enough of it. Not only the world above the water is breath taking but also the underwater world. The coral gardens are second to no other places in the gulf of Siam. Unfortunately like at Koh Samui the visibility is mostly not very good. There are days at April - Mai and August - September when the visibility can be quite good.
You will find many operators at Koh Samui who run tours to the Angthong National Marine Park.
For budget tourists who are not too keen about individual service but enjoy the big group experience in speed boats there are some good companies.
The more comfortable way is to go with one of the slow cruising tour or sailing boats. They are spacious and comfortable and you have a lot of relaxing time during the long journey on the boat.
If you would like to combine speed, comfort, individual service, safety, cruising experience, spacious boats there is Calypso with its high-speed Catamaran Yachts.
Calypso has many years of experience operating tours in the Gulf of Siam. Using the wisdom that Angthong does not deliver the best snorkel experience and remembering the faces of disappointment, there was no trip to Angthong with Calypso for many years. Not until the Catamaran Yachts were purchased. Now it was finally possible to the one trip that combines the excellent cruising experiences in the Marine Park and the superb snorkelling experience at Koh Tao or Koh Nang Yuan.
If you book prior to the tour you can also join a group of likeminded people to take your first breath underwater.
